Ghana Navy Intercepts Vessel, Detains 10 Nigerian Stowaways at Tema Port
The Ghana Navy has apprehended ten Nigerian nationals found stowed away aboard the Panamanian-flagged merchant vessel, MV Grand Venus, during a maritime security operation off the coast of Tema.
According to sources familiar with the incident, the stowaways are believed to have secretly boarded the vessel at Lagos Port Complex before its departure from Nigerian waters.
The ship’s crew reportedly detected unusual movements onboard during the voyage and immediately alerted maritime authorities, triggering the intervention of the Ghana Navy.
Following their arrest, the suspects were transferred to the custody of the Ghana Immigration Service and the Marine Police for processing and further investigation.
The incident has prompted Ghanaian authorities to announce enhanced security measures at the country’s ports to address irregular migration and strengthen maritime domain awareness in the Gulf of Guinea region.
Details regarding the identities of the detained individuals and the specific circumstances of their boarding remain unclear at the time of publication.
Maritime security experts note that stowaway incidents continue to pose significant safety and legal challenges for shipping operations in West African waters.
