In commemoration of the 2025 World Drowning Prevention Day, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) in partnership with the Lagos State Safety Commission organized a public sensitization and training programme aimed at reducing drowning incidents across the state.
The event, which held on Friday, July 25, at Festival Hotel, Amuwo Odofin, brought together key stakeholders, safety advocates, and members of the public to raise awareness on water safety and lifesaving practices.
This year’s global theme, “Anyone Can Drown, No One Should,” underscores the urgent need for proactive measures in tackling preventable drowning cases.
The highlight of the event was the hands-on training session where participants, including safety officers and residents, received instruction in basic lifesaving techniques such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and rescue procedures.
Speaking at the event, LASWA emphasized its commitment to prioritizing safety on Lagos inland waterways. The agency reaffirmed its collaborative approach with other government bodies to enhance public education, safety enforcement, and emergency preparedness.
As Lagos continues to promote water transport as a viable alternative, the agency noted that public awareness and community involvement in water safety remain critical to achieving zero drowning incidents.
