MWUN Commends Orion Marine, Sea Transport for Sailors’ Salary Increment

Lagos – The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has praised Orion Marine Services Limited and Seatransport Ltd for implementing significant salary increases for their sailor employees, following compliance with the National Joint Industrial Council (NJIC) workbook guidelines.

MWUN President-General Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, who recently assumed leadership after a decisive electoral victory, commended both Lagos-based companies for prioritizing workers’ welfare through the unprecedented salary review.

“It is only when workers are happy that employers can record optimum satisfaction in the sector,” Abi stated while signing the NJIC agreements. The veteran sailor and maritime expert praised the managements for “putting smiles on their faces” through improved remuneration packages.

The salary increments were achieved through collaborative efforts between the union leadership and both company managements, reflecting Abi’s administration’s commitment to advancing sailor welfare since taking office months ago.

Both Orion Marine Services and Seatransport, with operations based in Apapa, Lagos, have set “good examples of what responsible management should look like,” according to the union leader.

Abi called on other maritime sector companies to follow suit, warning that those failing to comply with fair salary standards would face union action and potential reporting to the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

“Both Orion and Seatransport are not operating from the moon,” Abi emphasized, urging other companies in the sector to prepare for compliance to “avert the wrath of the union.”

The development marks a significant step in labor relations within Nigeria’s maritime sector, as the union continues to push for improved working conditions and fair compensation for maritime workers nationwide.
