MWUN Confirms New Leadership as Oniha Takes Secretary-General Role
Three key appointments ratified in joint committee session
The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has officially confirmed Comrade Oniha Erazua as Secretary-General, ending his six-month acting tenure in the position. The confirmation was announced during a joint session of the union’s National Administrative Committee and Central Working Committee on Friday, August 15, 2025.
The session, held under the leadership of MWUN President General Comrade Francis Bunu Abi, also ratified appointments for two other senior positions within the maritime union.
Comrade Oniha’s appointment represents the culmination of a steady rise through the union hierarchy. The Edo State-born official previously served as Assistant Secretary-General before his promotion to Deputy Secretary-General, where he managed multiple portfolios including Training & Research, Education, and Media. His elevation to the top secretarial position follows the retirement of former Secretary-General Comrade Felix Akingboye.
An alumnus of the University of Ibadan where he earned a Master’s degree, Oniha brings academic credentials and teaching experience to his role, having worked as a classroom instructor before joining MWUN.
The union also confirmed two other strategic appointments. Olongwe Fred Dagogo, a mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Port Harcourt, has been promoted from Organizing Secretary to General Secretary of the Seamen & Water Transport Branch. His promotion comes after serving the maximum allowable period in his previous role.
Meanwhile, Comrade Joseph Ekwere has been appointed General Secretary of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) Branch. Ekwere, who holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Lagos, previously served as Computer Secretary under the Seamen & Water Transport Branch before his current assignment.
The three appointments signal MWUN’s commitment to promoting from within its ranks while ensuring experienced leadership across its key operational branches.
According to MWUN’s Head of Media, Comrade John Kennedy Ikemefuna, the newly confirmed officials have received congratulations from across the union structure.
